John Vanderslice
March 26, 2004
There has only been one time in my life that I was nervous to meet a performer, and that was with John Vanderslice. It's funny, because out of all the idols I've met in years past JV is without a doubt the most approachable by far - like a long lost friend, he reaches out and touches you to let you know it's good to see you again, even though you've just met. So I fumbled a bit asking to take his photos, sorry for the fanboyism, John. ;)Learning of John's work over the past few months has been nothing less than a revelation. I will admit freely that this isn't the kind of thing I'm usually into (Jen still can't figure out how I can go from listening to The Mars Volta to listening to JV) but I was hooked the second I heard him. I think part of it is that his recordings (co-engineered by Scott Solter, playing guitar and keyboards during this tour, and to whom I was also able to speak with) are some of the best I've ever heard, period. The recordings are so refreshing in the days of the big Shellac-y drum sound and screeching guitars - they're tight but luscious, gritty but beautiful... Just fantastic. And of course live, John of course didn't disappoint. John and company so clearly love what they're doing, which I hope comes through in these photos...You can find tons of John's music as well as an enormous amount of great photography at http://www.johnvanderslice.com. Go buy Cellar Door, you won't regret it.
